Behind the scenes of the musical

Working on or behind stage is no easy task. Trust me, I’ve done both. I have learned that either way, it is always going to be fun. Whether I am the kookiest character of the show, or being a fashionista behind stage; the show will always bring me delight.

This year, for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, I am working on costumes. So far, it has been a blast. I get to look through the costume closet for any usable pieces, and help design what we envision every character to be dressed like.

My first couple rehearsals were kind of rough, because of lack of knowledge on the show, but by the third or fourth, the costume crew had ideas flowing for everyone. The best idea that we had as a team was allowing the extra spellers to create their own characters. They came up with some pretty interesting ideas.

As of now, we have almost every costume set in stone, and it is one of the most exciting things that could ever happen. Seeing the cast walk out on to stage fully dressed from things we drew up in our heads is just breath taking.

Every Monday, the crew has a meeting for updates as to where we are with our pieces of the show. Being able to hear how far we have come to getting set, costumes, lighting, sound, and makeup ready for show night is magical.

All in all, I think my favorite part of this musical is being able to work behind stage, because it is something that I haven’t done in the past. I can experience the show from a whole new horizon. Being any part of the musical is a blast, and something that I will always find enjoyable.
