The annual Civic Memorial High School T.W.I.R.P. dance is just around the corner.

T.W.I.R.P. stands for “The Woman Is Required to Pay.” The dance is set for Feb. 24 and is sponsored by student council. The theme is Ain’t Life Grand. It will be more of a 20’s vibe and will be in the new gym, just like homecoming. Tickets will be on sale from February 20 – 23 and will be $10. The dance will start at 7:00 p.m. and will go on until 10:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

At many schools, T.W.I.R.P. is instead known as a “Sadie Hawkins” dance. At a Sadie Hawkins event, the girls invite the boys. Obviously, the traditional male and female roles aren’t adhered to so much today, so this had more relevance in days gone by.

Sadie Hawkins was a character in a the Li’l Abner comic strip. In the storyline of the comic, which took place in a town called Dogpatch, there was a day when the single women would chase bachelors and marry the one they wanted.
